Refrigerant Subcooling CoilAfter the condenser: fuller liquefaction, less compressor work
The refrigerant subcooling coil is a spiral refrigerant tube connected at the condenser outlet. It makes refrigerant that hasn't fully condensed liquefy more completely before the expansion valve, raising the cooling capacity of the indoor unit or evaporator and shortening compressor run time. No power, no water, no moving parts — for air conditioners, refrigeration equipment and non-centrifugal chillers.

- Proven benefits
- Raises refrigerant liquefaction and cooling capacity, shortening compressor run time and lowering energy use of AC, refrigeration and chillers (E).
- Limits
- Savings depend on model, load and outdoor temperature; a switching valve can be added to compare with and without the device over the same period, with on-site measurement as the reference.
How it worksWhy does subcooling the refrigerant save energy?
Ideally, refrigerant leaving the condenser should be entirely liquid, but in practice some is often still vapor — especially in summer when outdoor temperatures are high. Vapor in the liquid line means less heat can be absorbed at the indoor unit, so the compressor has to run longer. This device is a spiral copper tube connected at the condenser outlet: in the spiral, centrifugal force separates vapor on the inside from liquid on the outside; liquid against the tube wall sheds heat more easily, so it condenses more completely and can even drop below saturation temperature (subcooling) — cooling capacity rises and compressor work falls.
- 01Condenser outletMixed refrigerant enters the spiral.
- 02SeparationSpin throws liquid out, vapor stays in.
- 03CondensingLiquid on the wall cools and subcools.
- 04More capacityAbsorbs more heat, hits setpoint sooner.
- OKLess compressor workShorter run time; energy use and demand fall with it.
The device is just a passage for refrigerant — no motor, no power, no water; on heat pumps it also works in heating mode.
ResultsHow much does it save?
Since 2018 the manufacturer has accumulated more than 700 installations. Depending on equipment type, average annual savings are about 10–20%; the higher the ambient temperature and indoor load, the greater the effect.

COP (coefficient of performance) = cooling capacity ÷ power input; higher means more efficient. Taiwan's hot summers and long AC operating hours are exactly the conditions where the effect is more noticeable.
CompatibilityWhat does it fit?
Fits air conditioners, refrigeration equipment and chillers with compressor output of 2.25 kW or more using common fluorinated refrigerants, air-cooled or water-cooled.
Compatible
- Split, packaged and VRF AC
- Refrigeration in supermarkets, warehouses, food plants
- Screw and scroll chillers (air- or water-cooled)
- Refrigerants R410A, R32, R407C, R404A, R134a, R22 and others
Not compatible
- Centrifugal chillers
- Absorption chillers
- Equipment using ammonia or CO₂ refrigerant
- Chillers with hot-gas bypass
For centrifugal chillers, start with condenser fouling management — see Chiller Tube Auto-Cleaning.
VerificationProof? Add a switching valve
The hardest part of AC energy saving is proof: this year may beat last year simply because the weather was cooler. The device can be fitted with an optional switching valve that routes refrigerant either "with device" or "without device," so you can switch back and forth over the same period in the same weather — no year-over-year comparison or outdoor temperature correction needed.
Log energy with the power monitoring meter and the difference between modes is clear at a glance. For verification principles, see how to verify AC energy savings.

FAQCommon questions
What is a refrigerant subcooling coil?
It's a spiral refrigerant copper tube connected at the condenser outlet of an AC outdoor unit or chiller. In the spiral, centrifugal force separates refrigerant vapor from liquid; liquid against the tube wall sheds heat more easily, so it condenses more completely, cooling capacity rises and compressor run time falls — saving energy.
Can it damage the existing AC or chiller?
The device is just a refrigerant passage made of JIS-standard copper tube, with no moving parts. The manufacturer has had no case of equipment failure caused by the device, and it's covered by product liability insurance. If the equipment is still under warranty, we recommend installing after the warranty expires.
Does it need maintenance or power?
No. It uses no electricity or water and, barring a leak at a brazed joint or physical damage, is essentially maintenance-free after installation, with no operating cost.
Can it be installed on centrifugal chillers?
No. Centrifugal and absorption chillers, equipment using ammonia or CO₂ refrigerant, and chillers with hot-gas bypass are not compatible. For centrifugal chillers, start with condenser fouling management.
How long is the shutdown for installation?
It depends on horsepower: about 4 hours for a 10 HP unit and about 3 hours for a 2.25 kW unit; installation can be scheduled outside business hours.
How do you prove it actually saves energy?
Add the optional switching valve to route refrigerant either through the device or around it, and compare energy by alternating over the same period in the same weather — no year-over-year comparison or outdoor temperature correction needed.
Savings data are the manufacturer's own track record and tests; actual results depend on model, load, outdoor temperature and operating conditions.
